Meet Ella Baker
Ella Baker was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1903 and grew up in North Carolina. Stories from her family, including accounts of life under slavery, helped shape her commitment to justice. Baker believed that lasting change came from ordinary people working together, not only from famous leaders. She organized communities, supported voter-registration efforts, and worked with major civil rights organizations, including the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1960, she encouraged student activists to build an independent organization, helping inspire the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Baker listened closely to local people and helped emerging leaders develop their own skills and strategies. Her approach emphasized shared leadership, participation, and community knowledge. Rather than seeking attention for herself, Baker strengthened networks that could continue beyond one campaign or personality. Her life teaches that leadership can mean creating space for others, asking thoughtful questions, and helping communities turn their ideas into organized action.
