    Meet Fred Hampton

Fred Hampton was born in 1948 and grew up in the Chicago area. As a young organizer, Hampton became known for public speaking, coalition building, and community programs. He led the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party and promoted what he called a Rainbow Coalition, bringing together groups from different racial and economic backgrounds around shared concerns. The chapter supported programs that included free breakfasts for children, political education, health services, and other community assistance. Hampton argued that people facing poverty and discrimination could build power by organizing together. His work also drew intense attention from law enforcement. In December 1969, Hampton was killed during a police raid on his Chicago apartment. He was twenty-one years old. Hampton’s life remains important in discussions of community organizing, government surveillance, policing, and coalition politics. His story encourages students to consider how service, education, public speaking, and cooperation can become tools for improving neighborhoods and challenging inequality.
