Meet Marcus Garvey
Marcus Garvey was born in Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, in 1887. After working in printing and traveling through the Caribbean, Central America, and Britain, Garvey developed a global vision of Black pride, economic independence, and African unity. In 1914, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, commonly called the UNIA. After moving to the United States, Garvey built a large international movement through speeches, parades, businesses, and the newspaper Negro World. He encouraged people of African descent to value their history, support Black-owned enterprises, and think beyond national borders. Garvey also established the Black Star Line, a shipping company intended to support trade and connection across the African diaspora. The company struggled, and Garvey was later convicted of mail fraud, imprisoned, and deported. Although his ideas and methods were debated, his message influenced later movements for Pan-Africanism, independence, Black nationalism, and cultural pride. His legacy invites discussion about leadership, enterprise, unity, and self-determination.
