    Meet James Baldwin

James Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York, in 1924. As a teenager, he worked as a preacher, an experience that influenced the rhythm and moral urgency of his later writing. Baldwin moved to Paris in 1948, seeking distance from the racism and limitations he experienced in the United States. Through novels, essays, plays, and speeches, he explored race, identity, family, faith, love, and national responsibility. Works such as Go Tell It on the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son, and The Fire Next Time established him as a major American writer and public intellectual. Baldwin returned frequently to the United States and participated in conversations surrounding the civil rights movement, while maintaining an independent voice that challenged easy answers. His writing combined personal reflection with cultural criticism and asked readers to face uncomfortable truths. Baldwin’s legacy demonstrates how language can examine injustice, deepen empathy, and insist that a society measure itself honestly against its promises of freedom and equality.
