Meet Miriam Makeba
Miriam Makeba was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1932. Her voice and stage presence helped introduce audiences around the world to South African music. After performing with local groups and appearing in the film Come Back, Africa, Makeba traveled internationally and spoke openly against apartheid. South African authorities canceled her passport, and she spent many years unable to return home. Makeba built an international career through recordings, concerts, and collaborations while using her visibility to describe the injustice of apartheid. She addressed the United Nations and connected music with political advocacy, cultural pride, and African identity. Known widely as “Mama Africa,” Makeba performed in several languages and drew from South African musical traditions while reaching global audiences. She returned to South Africa after apartheid began to end. Makeba’s life shows how an artist can preserve culture, build international understanding, and use a public platform to oppose injustice. Her music continues to connect creativity, heritage, freedom, and belonging.
